Bowler on song then Ward and Needham hit out to topple leaders

NEW recruit Andy Exton quickly made his mark with Pontefract and District Cricket League Division Two promotion-chasers Sprotbrough.

Exton, signed from Fishlake, claimed four wickets on his debut as Sprotbrough toppled leaders Sandal.

Exton (4-39) and Steve Parkes (2-27) helped restrict the Wakefield side to 163-9.

In reply, Ashley Ward hit 67 and James Needham finished unbeaten on 54 as Sprotbrough knocked off the runs for the loss of only four wickets to put themselves three points behind new pacesetters Monk Bretton.

Barnby Dun improved their chances of avoiding relegation with an eight-point haul against fellow strugglers Rothwell.

Phil Day claimed 4-34 from 20 overs as Rothwell were limited to 111-8, replying to Barnby's 163 that featured an unbeaten 62 by Chris Broughton.

Batting first, Hooton posted 199-7, despite the efforts of Paul Jackson (4-86 from 23 overs) and Scott Lowe (4-60 from 18).

Steve Hughes (37no) held Conisbrough's reply together. Jonathan Phillips chipped in with 25 but it wasn't enough as the home side finished short on 153-7.

Conisbrough are now just one point ahead of Hooton, for whom all-rounder Daniel Owen struck 51 and took 4-51 from 19 overs. Fishlake's hopes of lifting the league championship for the third time in five years took a knock when their fixture at Askern was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

Third-placed Fishlake collected only two points and are now 15 points behind First Division leaders Streethouse, who regained top spot by beating Ackworth.

Fishlake A were involved in the day's closest finish when they tied with West Bretton in Division Three.

Matthew Mason struck a half-century and Steve Johnson made 23 in Fishlake's 112.

Tim Elliott snapped up 8-37 in a magnificent 19-over spell that included seven maidens as West Bretton were bowled out for an identical total in reply.

With West Bretton needing one run for victory and the last pair at the wicket, Elliott trapped Richard Smith lbw to ensure the match finished all-square. Both teams picked up seven points.

Conisbrough A slipped to seventh in the table with a six-wicket defeat at Ryhill.

Bob Fuller's 46 was in vain as Conisbrough were limited to 106-9 which Ryhill comfortably overhauled.

Bentley Colliery's Division Five promotion hopes were jolted when they were bowled out for 101, replying to leaders Featherstone's 155-9 in a match played at Eggborough Power Station because Bentley's pitch was waterlogged.
