Boss backs strike ace

ROTHERHAM United manager Mark Robins is tipping striker Chris O'Grady to make the grade but is preaching patience over the 21-year-old.

"I have a lot of faith in him and I feel he will develop into a good player for this football club," said Robins.

"He is a good lad but he frustrates people and probably frustrates himself as well.

"We are going to have to be patient. We want immediate success, we want inexperienced players to be performing well every week but it isn't like that.

"He will come through and you need to have patience with young players like him.

"Don't let's forget that he's already credited with three goals so far, making him our leading scorer, and he hasn't started every game."

O'Grady - a doubt in the build-up to last Saturday's game with Notts County due to a stiff back - went on at half-time for Bruce Dyer.

"I'd always intended getting Chris into the action," said Robins. "I thought he looked bright when he did get on. He's a lad who will get better and this club will benefit from that."

Also on the bench was new loan signing Ryan Cresswell, a central defender from Sheffield United. "With Ian Sharps currently on the sidelines, Ryan gives us that cover should anything else happen," said Robins.

"He's a strong, solid centre-half who is going to be a good player. It also takes the pressure off Ian Sharps to get fit because he has been pushing, putting himself under a bit of pressure to get back and then getting set back.

"Ryan will also add to the competition for places and we've one or two now in most positions."

Cresswell will make his Millers debut this afternoon when he plays for the reserves at home to Grimsby Town in the Pontins League (2pm).

Meanwhile, new loan star Michael Johnson wants to stay at Hillsborough and believes that Sheffield Wednesday should carry on keeping faith with the man who signed him, Brian Laws.

Johnson would like to join the Owls on a full transfer and feels that they can have a bright future. The 34-year-old defender described Laws as a very good manager - as the Owls boss celebrates a win that relieves pressure on him and saw the club end a losing run that had led to speculation about his job.
