Goals in the 85th and 90th minute from Kirsty Linnett and Josanne Potter ended Belles’ FA Women’s Cup run as they were knocked out 3-1 in the fifth round by European Cup semi-finalists Birmingham City.

The Blues went into an eighth minute lead when clever play from Linnett saw the City forward deliver into the path of Remi Allen who tapped in from close range.

However, Belles skipper Leandra Little equalised, guiding home a Jess Sigsworth cross in the 73rd minute.

Doncaster pressed their FAWSL1 hosts, but Little and Rhiannon Roberts were both unable to guide their headers home. Kasia Lipka later struck from distance before the Blues had two penalty appeals waved away.

The best chance for the Belles came shortly after the half hour mark when Beth England’s header was blocked from point blank range and Millie Bright’s follow-up was cleared off the line.

Birmingham’s Linnett, Allen and Karen Carney all had second half chances for the hosts before Belles’ equaliser.

However, City pounced at the death for a late victory as they booked their place in the cup’s last eight thanks to a Linnett looping effort and a 25-yard Potter strike.
