The midfielder limped out of Saturday's 2-0 South Yorkshire derby defeat at Sheffield Wednesday with a muscle injury.

He was due for a scan on Monday afternoon and the Reds are hoping that it does not show major damage.

First-team coach Dale Tonge has confirmed that Mowatt will not feature against Carlisle in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday regardless of the results of the scan.

“He has got a scan so we will find out more after that,” Tonge said. “It is a muscle strain we think, hopefully it is not too sinister, but I think it's a muscle strain in his side.

“It's not clear yet but I think precaution will take over.”

Deadline day signings Patrick Schmidt and Clarke Oduor could feature with Dani Pinillos and Jordan Williams are also likely to be involved.

Tonge added of Tuesday's Oakwell encounter: "We will give game time to those who have not played (so far). It is a massive opportunity. It is a big chance to impress ahead of the weekend.

“It is going to be a tough game, they have got some very good players there. We know it is going to be a tough test.

“We understand that it is another opportunity to get a winning mentality. If we win we know we will take that confidence into Saturday.”
