The two clubs have reportedly agreed a fee for the centre-half, who is expected to have a medical at the Potters this week.

Lindsay's exit would come on the back of Ryan Hedges' decision not to renew his Oakwell contract, while skipper Adam Davies is also expected to join Stoke when his contract expires at the end of the month.

It is no surprise that Lindsay is wanted by Nathan Jones' side, who are looking to make a return to the Premier League after a disappointing first season in the Championship last term.

The 23-year-old helped Barnsley post a record 21 clean sheets on their way to League One promotion as they conceded only 39 goals in their 46 games.

This is not the first interest in the Scot, who joined the Reds from Partick in 2017, as he has been linked with Italian side Brescia while he was also on the radar of several other second-tier clubs in the January transfer window.

It would be a big blow for Barnsley to break up their central defensive partnership, that also consisted of Ethan Pinnock ahead of their return to the Championship.

Being part of that duo was something that Lindsay was proud of.

He said: “We pride ourselves on clean sheets, whoever is playing, and to get the most in the league is a good achievement for the defenders and the whole team because we work together defending as a team.”
