The Austrian, who has lost his first two games in charge, has appointed Adam Murray as a first-team coach, having had a month-long stint as caretaker manager.

Struber brought Max Senft and Matt Rose with him into the role – and that means Reds stalwart Dale Tonge has left the club.

The former defender stepped up into the position of first-team coach in February under Daniel Stendel and helped the club win promotion.

A club statement said: “Dale Tonge has left his role as first-team coach.

“Dale’s contribution to the success of the 2018-19 promotion winning campaign will live long in the club’s memory, adding further memories to his playing career at Oakwell, where he also achieved promotion.

“Tonge stepped into the role as first team coach at a vital time during last season. Everyone connected to Barnsley Football Club would like to thank him for his efforts in securing a memorable promotion.”

The Reds lost to Middlesbrough midweek, going down to an Ashley Fletcher's goal which leaves Barnsley eight points from safety.

“For 60 minutes I think we created an interesting game,” said Struber.

“Our match plan did well. In the end we have no points and this is not so easy to take in the situation we are in.

“It is a frustrating situation, a difficult situation. We have to change the mindset in the next days to win again. This is my job to do now.”
