The Australian midfielder was a key player for the Reds on their way to League One promotion last season, but had to watch from the sidelines as his team-mates finished the job after he broke his leg in March.

After a long period of rehabilitation he is back in action and has featured in Barnsley's last five games.

The landscape is very different from when he last played as the Reds are bottom of the table without a win since August and there has been a huge turnaround in playing staff.

But just being out on the pitch is the most important thing for him.

“Personally it is great to be back,” he said. “It has been tough on the body but I am buzzing to be back.

“Going from nothing to three games in a week would be tough for anyone. But it is not something I am thinking of, I do feel fit.”

Dougall, who is away with Australia in the current international break and was an unused substitute in their 1-0 win against Jordan on Thursday, was back running over the summer, but had to wait to be considered for action.

“That is the most frustrating part of being injured, the initial part you cant really do too much so you can accept that,” he explained.

“But when you can do more it can be frustrating because you can do more and you think, 'Why can't I play'.

“When you get yourself past the initial rehab stage it is tough.”
