Barnsley ‘have enough quality to do well in the Championship’ says Cameron McGeehan

McGeehan played an important role in the Reds' automatic promotion campaign in League One, earning himself a place in the divisional team of the year.

The manner in which the side played under Daniel Stendel has given hope that they will be able to compete in the second tier, but keeping their young team together could be paramount.

The Reds have already tied down Cauley Woodrow, Mike Bahre and Jacob Brown, but they are still waiting on answers over new deals for Adam Davies and Ryan Hedges.

The pair are currently away on a Wales training camp.

McGeehan experienced Championship action last time the Tykes were in the division and he believes they will be more competitive this time around.

“I had a taste of it last year, there are a lot of big clubs, a lot of big stadiums, a lot of quality, but we have got enough quality here to go and do well,” he told the Star. “Hopefully we can keep the squad together and have a right bash at it last year.

“We have got the games against Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday which have a massive rivalry for us and will be amazing to be a part of

“Hopefully we can get some good results and we can be more competitive than we were last year.”

Bahre is another player who is looking to take his game up a level.

The German agreed a long-term contract last week after making his loan move from Hannover a permanent one.

He was involved in plenty of goals for the Reds last season, even if his personal tally and assists were low on numbers.

“I assisted many times,” he said. “Even if it wasn’t the actual assist, I was often involved in the build-up, or kicking off the press which is what the Gaffer asks from me.

“Of course I wanted to get more goals, and I’ll be looking to improve on that in the Championship.”

Meanwhile, youngster Romal Palmer has signed a new one-year contract at Oakwell.

The midfielder, who has yet to feature for the first team, spent time on loan at Darlington last season.
