Barnsley’s Sam Winnall would love to fulfil a childhood dream and play at Wembley.

But the striker, who has scored twice in his last four games, knows the club face a ‘tough’ test at Wigan Athletic this afternoon.

“The JPT is a road to Wembley – and there’s a lot of players in our squad including myself who have never played there,” he said.

“It’s something you’d like to tick off your bucket list.

“It’s not something that many players get the chance to achieve. It would be a fantastic on a personal level and it would be great for the fans to have a day out at Wembley.

“It’s a really good opportunity for us.

“Wigan will be a tough test because they are a strong team. We know it’s going to be a tough game, but we can win. We believe we can go there and play some really good football.

“I’ve been to Wembley as a fan, so I know what it’s like.”

The Reds have lost nine of their last 11 league outings, but their JPT form as been the polar opposite with some spirited wins.

“We want to get through to the final. We want to turn our league form into the cup,” stressed Winnall.

“Touch wood, but I think the run of bad performances which we’ve been having are over.

“We’re starting to find our performances now and starting to play some decent stuff.

“We’re starting to bring our quality on to the pitch now, but it’s time we started to turn that quality into results.”

Winnall has bagged seven goals so far this season, but the former Scunthorpe United marksman wants more.

“Me being a perfectionist I’ll never be happy with where I’m at, I’m always wanting to score more goals,” added the 24-year-old.

“But there’s always areas where I can improve. It’s about getting in the right areas and putting myself in the position to get those goals.

“Continuity always help performances. We’ve found our shape now, so I think we can only go from strength to strength.”
