BARNSLEY will host an England Under-21 international at Oakwell later this year.

They beat off strong competition from other clubs to host the England-v-Israel international friendly on Monday, September 5 (kick-off 7pm).

“It’s great we’re to host this match, it’s quite a prestigious event for us,” Reds director Don Rowing told The Star.

“We’ve not had an Under-21 international for a number of years, so we wrote to the Football Association and said we’d be interested.

“It should be worth watching and hopefully we can attract a decent crowd like we have done for other international matches we’ve hosted in the past.”

Meanwhile, former Reds’ striker Garry O’Connor has returned to former club Hibernian having been released from Oakwell shortly before the end of last season.

The 28-year-old striker has penned a season-long contract with Hibs having failed to fire in South Yorkshire.

“I think Hibs are going to get the best out of me,” said O’Connor.
