But a disappointing defeat at Elland Road has left the club with a mountain to climb with just three fixtures remaining.

They remain two points adrift of safety after fellow strugglers Wolves were hammered by champions Wolves.

And time is running out for the Reds to maintain their second tier status.

Tom Pearce put the home side with his first senior goal in the 25thminute, rifling into the bottom right-hand corner.

But credit to the visitors as Paudie O’Connor’s own-goal, from a Zeki Fryers cross, saw the Reds handed a lifeline.

However,, Ezghan Alioski bagged what proved to be the winner in the 50thminute as the Heckingbottom had the last laugh against his former club.

Barnsley can still avoid relegation but their form is poor and off-field problems looked to have left the club struggling to stay up.
