High stakes in Oakwell clash

WITH both sides languishing in the bottom three, the derby showdown between Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday could hardly be bigger, especially as Owls boss Dave Jones’ job is on the line.

The pressure on the pair to pick up a result is intense and that is only magnified by the presence of the TV cameras at Oakwell, where the Tykes are slight favourites at 6/4 with bet365 and Stan James price a Wednesday triumph at 15/8.

Inevitably, the stalemate will be well backed at 5/2 via BetVictor, as it is in all derby contests while cash is also set to come in for a 2-2 scoreline at 14/1 (William Hill) as well as Ladbrokes’ 5/1 for scores to be level at the end of each half.

Barnsley supporters wary of an inconclusive affair can back their side at 31/40 courtesy of BetVictor in the ‘Draw No Bet’ market, where Skybet rate the Owls at even money but as Jones’ charges make the short journey on the back of seven straight defeats, Keith Hill’s men will be confident of a more positive outcome.

For home fans sharing that optimism, Stan James chalk the Tykes up at 9/1 to finish on the right side of a 2-1 scoreline and it’s 16/5 via BetVictor for Barnsley to shade it by a one-goal margin. Wednesday meanwhile, are a slightly chunkier 7/2 (Paddy Power) to prevail by a solitary strike and bet365 make them 10/1 to stop the rot by registering a vital 2-1 triumph.

Sheffield United are also preparing for a huge match as they host League One leaders Tranmere. The Blades will leapfrog their opponents in the table with a victory and Stan James have installed Danny Wilson’s troops as odds-on favourites at 10/11, with Rovers quoted by BetVictor at 16/5 to inflict a first home reverse of the campaign on United.

The visitors excellent record on the road could encourage a flurry of draw bets at 5/2 (Skybet) but as Rovers are winless in four in the league, Wilson’s team should have the edge and bet365 offer 13/5 about them nicking it by one.

More specifically, it’s 15/2 with BetVictor for the Blades to run out 2-1 winners and Stan James post 7/2 against a home success on the back of an even first half.

The result in that clash will be of major interest to Doncaster, who are sandwiched between the pair in the table. A draw or Sheffield United victory would give Rovers the chance to rise to the summit provided they beat Coventry, an outcome bet365 rate at 6/4.

Finally, in League Two, Rotherham are 11/10 (Paddy Power) to boost their promotion hopes by beating AFC Wimbledon and BetVictor make in-form Chesterfield evens to see off Burton.
