Barnsley moved quickly yesterday to stress midfielder Jacob Mellis is not for sale.
Premier League Crystal Palace are rumoured to be weighing up a £600,000 move for the former Chelsea playmaker.
But a Barnsley spokesperson made the Oakwell club’s stance very clear.
“The club have not received any bids for Jacob Mellis.
The spokesperson added: “Nor do we want to sell a player who is an integral part of the squad and [manager] David Flitcroft’s plans for this season.”
Mellis, aged 22, has one year remaining on his current two-year contract at Oakwell and The Star under stands the player is seen as key to the Reds’ plans for the fast -approaching Championship season.
The former Sheffield United youth team player has represented England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 levels – and last season made 41 appearances for Barnsley, scoring six goals.
Former Barnsley striker Marlon Harewood is on trial at Millwall.
The 33-year-old was released by the Reds at the end of last season.
Bristol City are also believed to be interested in signing the former Blackpool and West Ham United hitman.
Barnsley are to hold their annual ‘Golf Day’ on Monday, August 19 at the Silkstone Golf Course, 2pm tee off.
A four-man team costs £260+VAT, which includes lunch, 18 holes of golf, an evening meal and a presentation evening. Each team will also get the chance to play with a celebrity captain, while individual places are also available at £90+VAT.
The Reds’ annual ‘Open Day’ will take place on Sunday, July 28 between 11am – 3pm.
First team boss Flitcroft and assistant manager Micky Mellon will be present, as will the first team squad who will be on hand to sign autographs and for photographs.
The day is free to all of the club’s supporters.
