Davies the hero as Reds win a thriller

CRAIG Davies was Barnsley’s match-winner in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Peterborough United at London Road.

The Reds led 3-0 thanks to goals from Jim O’Brien, skipper Jacob Butterfield and substitute Ricardo Vaz Te, but George Boyd, Ryan Bennett and sub Lee Frecklington saw Posh level with three goals in six crazy minutes, before Davies bagged the winner with 12 minutes to go.

O’Brien put the Reds ahead in the 17th minute courtesy of a cruel deflection which left Posh keeper Lewis wrong-footed.

Then, in second half injury time, skipper Butterfield gave the visitors a two-goal cushion as Posh were hit on the counter attack.

A wonderful strike from the England Under-21 international left Lewis no chance as the Reds went in at half-time bouyant.

After the break substitute VAZ TE bagged their third goal of the afternoon having been on the pitch for just over a minute.

Posh boss Ferguson then made a triple substitution as his side went search of an unlikely comeback.

The changes worked and having seen Taylor force a smart save from Steele, Posh pulled a goal back through Boyd in the 64th minute.

Bennett then pulled another goal back, poking home into bottom left-hand corner after a cutting pass from sub Frecklington.

Tomlin wasted another good chance to score as Posh nearly made it 3-3 but, to the delight of the home supporters, Frecklington pounced with 20 minutes to go to equalise matters. Body threaded the forward through and he finished smartly in finding the right corner.

Davies had his first chance of the afternoon in the 76th minute, but saw his shot cleared from Butterfield’s corner. But the on-song striker made it six goals in six games, hitting the bottom left corner with a powerful strike as Barnsley regained the lead.

The Reds were clinging on and were very lucky when sub Tunnicliffe struck the bar, but Hill’s charges did enough for the points.
