David Fox is relishing the chance to play in his first-ever South Yorkshire derby.

Barnsley host Sheffield Wednesday today knowing a win would help them leapfrog their rivals in the Championship table.

And Fox, on loan from Norwich City until January, is confident he can play his part in that aim.

“It is one of the games that stood out when I joined the club” said Fox. “After our win against Middlesbrough we’re targeting picking up some points and this is a massive game to do that in. I’ve played in quite a few derbies in my time, but I’ve been lucky enough to have been on the winning side for most of them. Hopefully we can build on what we achieved against Middlesbrough and get a big win.”

Former Manchester United midfielder Fox has played for Blackpool against Preston in a Lancashire derbies and also for his parent club Norwich against Ipswich Town. And so the 29-year-old knows how important local bragging rights will be for Reds’ fans.

“You still prepare the same way for these games and still play for the same amount of points, but derbies are special,” added Fox.

“Winning means a lot to the players, the manager and the supporters. The supporters want those local bragging rights and it’s something for them to talk about for a while. If we could beat Wednesday it would give us a huge boost. Two wins in this league can really shoot you up the table.”

Fox is with the Reds on a 93-day emergency loan and has “loved” the opportunity of being able to play first-team football.

And he hopes he can impress this weekend as the Reds looks to avenge two defeats to the Owls from last season.

“There’s added spice as well because of the position both clubs find themselves in,” said Fox. “If we can we know we can go above them and it would really improve our position.

“The fans will be looking forward to the match – and so are we. We’ve got a run of fixtures now where we really believe we can start picking up some points. We all know how crazy this league is, a couple of back-to-back wins and you can find yourself climbing five or six places. That’s our aim.”
