The Everton youngster missed the Reds’ run-in after returning to the Premier League club due to injury.

Defensive midfielder Williams, who played 38 times for the club, said: “I’m sure the club will bounce back next year. I’m gutted the lads couldn’t get the job done, but I’m sure they’ll be straight back up.

“I’d like to thank the club and I loved every minute of my time there.

“It’s been my first season out playing proper football and been a great experience.

“The fans were superb with me. I’ve had some great messages recently and I loved the ‘craic’ with the lads in the changing room.”

The 21-year-old’s best moment in a Reds shirt was his sensational strike against Burton Albion.

The strike earned him the Goal of the Season award and the Toffees midfielder admits he may never score a better goal.

Reflecting on his 25-yard left-footed bullet, he said: “I I didn’t even see it go in. I’ve took a chance, I’ve hit it and the next second I’m getting clattered by their lad and I’m on the floor. I only knew it’d gone in when I heard the fans screaming.”
