New Barnsley signing Marley Watkins is confident he can hit the ground running at Oakwell.
And if that’s the case then Reds’ fans should hopefully have plenty to look forward to next season.
“I want to come down to England and prove myself,” said Watkins. “I want to achieve success with Barnsley.
“I want to aim as high as possible – and the manager [Lee Johnson] believes in me, which is great. I feel like I’ve had a few knockbacks in the past, but it has only made me come back stronger.
“I want to prove any doubters wrong and prove to myself that I can be successful here.”
Watkins is the second of two new signings made by Johnson this summer with defender Marc Roberts having joined the club, while goalkeeper Adam Davies, centre-back Lewin Nyatanga and promising youngster George Maris having all penned new contracts with the League One outfit.
And with further signings expected, including a striker and a centre-back before the new campaign kicks off, Watkins is understandably excited about what the future holds for him in South Yorkshire.
“I’ve been really impressed with what the manager has had to say and what he wants to achieve,” added Watkins.
“It’s great to be part of a team which is so ambitious. This is a great opportunity for me.
“I just want to play wherever the gaffer wants me to play. This is a massive club and a promotion push excites me here.”
