BARNSLEY swooped yesterday to sign former Newcastle United midfielder Dennis Knight, writes Neil Goulding.

But the club didn’t manage to sign Manchester United loan midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe on a new loan deal.

Free agent Knight, released by the Magpies in January, has joined on non-contract terms until the end of the season.

But it is understood the 19-year-old is unlikely to play any role in the club’s first team at such a crucial stage in the season as the Oakwell outfit continue to battle to avoid relegation.

“We’ve signed Dennis Knight until the end of the season,” confirmed Reds’ director Don Rowing. “He’s joined us on non-contract terms and will probably play for our under-21 side to get some games under his belt.”

Stephen Dawson is back from a long lay-off with an ankle injury and in contention to start in tomorrow’s South Yorkshire derby with Sheffield Wednesday.
