Wagner kept the Terriers in the Premier League last term after taking the Yorkshire side up the previous season.

Little-known German gaffer Stendel begins his first job in English football at Oakwell in just under two weeks, tasked with securing the Reds an immediate return to the Championship.

Stendel will employ a high-intensity counter-pressing system which has yielded success for compatriots Wagner and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp during their time in England.

The 44-year-old has already spoken with Sheffield Wednesday boss Joe Luhukay about the rigours of English football.

The high press was successful during the Reds' last promotion campaign.

However, Lloyd Isgrove is the only outfield player still at the club - after a year back at Southampton - from that side.

When Klopp first took over at Anfield, the high-intensity nature of his style of play saw a lot of players struck down with hamstring and other soft-tissue injuries early on and that is something Stendel will have to be wary of.

Stendel wants the Reds to have the tag of the best footballing side in League One next season.

He said: 'The English style of football fits well to my personal football philosophy. The style of football the fans can expect is for us to get the ball forward and regain the ball quickly after losing it.'

Stendel may have to find a replacement centre forward Kieffer Moore early in his reign.

Barnsley have already knocked back six-figure offers for the striker.

It is understood a trio of Championship clubs are interested in the 25-year-old, who has scored four times in 20 games for the Reds.

Scot Stevie Mallan could be on his way to Sunderland or Hibernian.
