Barnsley have sacked José Morais and his coaching team following the club’s relegation to League One,

A 4-1 defeat at Derby County consigned the Reds to the drop.

Morais, who has worked with Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea, was appointed as Paul Heckingbottom’s successor in mid-February.

The Portuguese head coach managed just three wins in his 15 games in charge.

A statement on the club’s website said: “Following a relegation clause within their contracts, the employment of José Morais, Dimas Teixeira and Joao Cunhã has been terminated with immediate effect.

“The Portuguese trio joined the Club in February 2018 following the departure of the previous management team.

“Barnsley Football Club would like to place on record their thanks to José, Dimas and Joao for their efforts whilst in charge of the first team.”

It added: “The Club acknowledges the disappointment of relegation and shares the view of supporters that this has been a disappointing season of results.

“The aim is now to have a proactive summer both on and off the pitch, in order to gain promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship.”
