BARNSLEY have announced six pre-season friendlies for next season and they’re still on the hunt for a Premier League club at Oakwell before they kick off the Championship campaign on August 18.
All of the club’s matches are away, but there will be one home fixture for Saturday, July 28 which is yet to be confirmed.
“We’re trying to get a Premier League club to play at Oakwell [on July 28], but not got anything confirmed at the moment,” Reds director Don Rowing told the Star.
The Reds kick off pre-season away to Nicky Law’s Alfreton Town on Tuesday, July 17, and conclude on Saturday, August 11, at Bradford City, three days before they start their season proper in the Carling Cup.
The Reds’ first Championship match will be on Saturday, August 18, with opponents known when the 2012-13 fixtures are officially released on Monday, June 18.
The Reds had been expected to play Sheffield Wednesday in pre-season, a fixture which they have played in recent times.
But with the Owls having won promotion back to the Championship it was deemed unsuitable to play them before the season started.
However, there are two exciting Yorkshire derbies to look forward to against Rotherham United, expected to be the first game at the Millers’ new New York Stadium, as well as Doncaster Rovers who lost their Championship status this term.
Barnsley’s fixtures so far are (all away): July 17 v Alfreton Town (7.45pm); July 21 v Rotherham United (3pm); July 24 v Stocksbridge Park Steels (7.30pm); July 28 v TBC (home fixture, 3pm); August 4 v Doncaster Rovers (3pm); August 7 v Crewe (7.45pm); Aug 11 v Bradford City (3pm).
