Barnsley yesterday reassured their fans about speculation of a possible takeover at Oakwell after former Swindon Town chairman Jed McCrory, and some unknown investors, were linked with a rumoured £5million takeover bid of the club.

But The Star understands that these rumours are well wide of the mark.

A club statemeant read: “From time to time the owner of Barnsley Football Club, Mr Patrick Cryne, receives unsolicited approaches to buy the Club, which has recently led to speculation about a takeover.

“These are referred to his advisors to evaluate whether they have the necessary substance to develop the club going forward and that the prospective buyer’s objectives can be met without compromising the ethos of the club.

“To date, offers have not met these criteria. No offers are being evaluated at present and the focus of everyone connected with the club is on improving our league position without distraction.”

Rumours have been rife that Reds owner Cryne has been keen to sell for some time.

The Star understands Cryne, an avid Barnsley fan, will only sell to someone who he believes will build the club in the future.
