Barnsley are understood to be closing in on another attacking signing ahead of the new season.

The Reds have already recruited former Bayern Munich winger Ryan Jennings, ex-Sheffield Wednesday striker Chris O’Grady and former Bristol City centre-back Lewin Nyatanga.

But The Star understands Reds’ boss David Flitcroft is keen to add another striker to his squad.

Flitcroft has 19 senior players at his disposal, while youngsters from the club’s development squad are expected to get their chances during what promising to be another testing Championship campaign.

At present the Reds have O’Grady, Chris Dagnall and Jason Scotland as their three senior strikers, while youngster Danny Rose - who is currently injured - might also play a bigger role this season.

However, Flitcroft is understood to want to add one more striker to strengthen his firepower.

Flitcroft did try and entice former Bristol City striker Jon Stead to Oakwell, but the player didn’t want the move.

And the Reds were also thwarted in their attempts to prise the highly-rated Michael Higdon away from Motherwell.

Although Flitcroft is not any rush to add to his squad, he believes one more striker would be a welcome addition to the first team, especially before the Reds kick off their season at home to Wigan Athletic at Oakwell.

“I spoke to Michael Higdon at length. I think he had good offers from abroad,” Flitcroft told The Star.

“I talked to Jon Stead about joining the club to see if we could broker a deal.

“But the shape of the squad is good and I’m happy with that.”

Meanwhile, Barnsley are to hold their annual Golf Day on Monday August 19 at the Silkstone Golf Course, 2pm tee-off.

A four-man team costs £260+VAT, which includes lunch, 18 holes of golf, an evening meal and a presentation evening.

Each team will also get the chance to play with a celebrity captain.

The Reds’ annual‘Open Day will take place on Sunday July 28 between 11am and 3pm.
