Manager Paul Heckingbottom is happy Barnsley have beat off competition to sign central defender Angus MacDonald.

Barnsley number one Adam Davies remains a doubt for the Reds’ Championship opener at Portman Road with a slight niggle, with Townsend next in line for the goalkeeper’s shirt.

The former England youth international signed a two-year deal at Oakwell yesterday – for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old is the ninth addition to the Reds this summer alongside the likes of George Moncur and Tom Bradshaw.Heckingbottom has been looking to bolster his defensive stocks ahead of a challenging Championship campaign, which gets underway this Saturday against Ipswich at Portman Road.

And MacDonald fits the mould of player the Barnsley boss is looking for at the club perfectly; young, hungry and willing to put in the work to improve on his game.

“He’s a player I’ve been keeping a close eye on for some time now, and I am delighted to bring him to Oakwell,” revealed Heckingbottom.

“Our squad is young and hungry, and Angus fits that mould perfectly. He will be re-joining League football and I can see his desire to learn quickly with us.

“He will help the side in an area I felt we needed to reinforce and I want to get him involved with the squad as quickly as possible.

“It’s now down to Angus to show us that he has what it takes to make the step up and put himself in contention.”

MacDonald has previously played in the Football League during loan spells at AFC Wimbledon and Torquay.

The player will join the defensive ranks alongside Marc Roberts, whose career took a similar rise. Roberts joined the club from Halifax in 2015.

MacDonald, who was the Gulls’ skipper before the move up north, only recently signed a contract extension at Plainmoor with the board agreeing he could move on if an opportunity arose for him to play at a higher level. The National League side are also in financial difficulty after a takeover fell through on Sunday.

Sessi D’Almeida is expected tosign a deal at Oakwell in the next few days following a successful trial. The defensive midfielder came off the bench during Saturday’swin over Peterborough.
