Barnsley hotshot Sam Winnall has heaped praise on the Reds’ supporters after their 2-0 victory over Gillingham on Saturday.
The 24-year-old frontman tucked away the second goal just before half-time to put his side in control at Oakwell, taking his tally to four in all competitions.
And the former Scunthorpe striker was quick to acknowledge the fans for their continued backing of both himself and the club.
“It always helps when the fans are behind you and I’m one of the lucky ones,” said Winnall. “Ever since I’ve joined they’ve been nothing but great to me and I can’t say a bad word about any of the fans.
“They’ve always supported me through the good times and the bad so I’d just encourage them to keep going. I’ll keep putting everything into the games and hopefully they’ll return the favour.”
Winnall’s dynamic style and exceptional work rate have endeared him to the Barnsley faithful since his arrival from Scunthorpe at the start of last season.
But he admits he isn’t quite sure how such a special relationship has been struck up so soon into his Reds career.
“Maybe I’m easy to make songs up about but I don’t know,” he laughed. “There just seems to have been a great relationship blossomed since the day I joined.
“It’s fantastic between me and the fans and long may that continue. I’ll keep working as hard as possible and hopefully they’ll keep cheering me on.”
Well known for leading the line at Oakwell, Winnall was asked to drop into a deeper central midfield role in the latter stages of Saturday’s win, a job he was more than happy to take on.
“We obviously had the problem with Ben [Pearson],” Winnall added. “He was cramping up and we were 2-0 up and just needed to keep the shape.
“So the gaffer wanted to drop me in deeper because he knows he can rely on me from a defensive point of view as well, so I just wanted to drop in there, do my job for the team and see the game through.
“I felt as if I put in a good performance up top and when I dropped into centre midfield as well.
“It was a thoroughly pleasing day. We got the clean sheet which is another bonus for the defenders, and we can take a lot of confidence from that result.”
