WITH the new 2012/13 campaign now just a couple of weeks away, Barnsley assistant boss Dave Flitcroft has reaffirmed his belief that experience can play a major part in potential Championship success.
It was a case of ‘mission accomplished’ for the Championship outfit as they retained their second tier status with a couple of games to spare last term, so now Flitcroft is looking for the squad to build on that achievement.
He told the Star: “Competition and winning is what we live for every day.
“I think we always knew that a lot of the players would be better in their second season at this level.
“David Perkins has now got 40 Championship games under his belt, while Scott Wiseman, Matty Done, Scott Golbourne and Jimmy McNulty are just a few of the players who have benefitted from playing a good number of Championship games.
“We know that we can’t do our transfer business satisfactorily in January because all you’re going to get is someone else’s cast-offs – players that nobody else wants.
“Nobody is going to sell an in-form striker so that’s why we’ve been asking the club to invest in the squad at the right time to complement the lads we already have here.
“You’ve really got to be very careful what business you do in January.”
