BARNSLEY boss Keith Hill has told The Star that he’s not given up hope of signing Manchester City striker Alex Nimely.

But Hill has identified Sheffield Wednesday’s leading scorer, Chris O’Grad,y as his chief loan target.

The loan window shuts in little over a fortnight and Hill is desperate to strengthen his squad with a striker and ideally three more players.

However, with money tight at Oakwell, Hill would be happy if he can recruit two players before the loan window closes, especially with influential striker Craig Davis and midfielder David Perkins both sidelined with injury.

Hill revealed: “We were close to signing Alex Nimely, but unfortunately he hadn’t gone through the full protocol and he wasn’t going to be ready to play for us straight away.

“But that’s a deal we could definitely re-visit in the next few weeks because things could change.

“He’s a player we really like and has a lot of potential, but there was no point signing him if he wasn’t going to be able to play for a while.”

The Star understands Nimely is nursing a hamstring problem, so Hill was not prepared to take a risk on the young striker having hoped he would be ready for action.

And so Hill has intensified his efforts to recruit a new marksman and, having already made initial enquiries about O’Grady, in pre-season and earlier this term, the Oakwell gaffer has earmarked the Owls man as the forward he really wants to sign.

“To get him [Chris O’Grady] into the building would be brilliant, he’s a player I’ve admired for a long time,” added Hill.

“We’ve been trawling around looking at a lot of strikers but we can’t afford to over-panic.

“It’s difficult getting players at this time in the season, but we know recruitment’s key. Ideally I’d like to get three or four players into the building but I’d settle for two, maybe one this week and maybe one next week.”
