The Reds went down 2-1 at Pride Park on Thursday night in the 34-year-old's first appearance for the Rams.

England's record goalscorer, who has taken a player-coach role at the midlands club, had an immediate impact, providing an assist for Jack Marriott’s opener and also contributing to Martyn Waghorn’s winner.

Struber, who saw his side lose for the first time in six games, said: “It was not enough for a point.

“The energy from the opponent with Rooney for the first 30 minutes gave us a lot of problems in the game and we couldn’t find control.

“In many situations we could have been better.

“It is not so easy because our situation is difficult and we need points.

“We need to play like we did in the second half from the beginning.

“We need to focus and concentrate better for the whole match, from the beginning.''

Elliot Simoes’ first Football League goal had brought the Reds level and Struber was impressed with the youngsters performance after he came on to replace the injured Mike Bahre in the first half.

“I saw Elliot in training and I trust him.

“He’s a very good player and a big talent,” added Struber.

“He created a very good performance, is very quick in his head so I am happy with his performance; he has shown me that he is a player for the first team.”
