AT LAST…

DONCASTER Rugby League Club grabbed a National League One relegation lifeline as they beat fellow strugglers Rochdale Hornets 34-30 at the Keepmoat Stadium.

But with the visitors picking up a bonus point for finishing within 12 points of the winning score, the bottom-of-the-table Dons remain three points adrift of Hornets and six behind Batley, who also picked up a point at Whitehaven.

The win ended a run of eight defeats.

Head coach John Stankevitch said: "We've got four games left and if we can pick up three points in every game then we'll have a chance of staying in this division; it is as simple as that.

"I was really happy to get a win. The players have worked really hard since I've been here and I am delighted for them.

"Obviously it was disappointing to concede 30 points. We know that we are struggling a little bit defensively, though I thought that we defended well at times.

"I thought that we got a bit complacent after going 12-0 up early on and 34-18 late in the game.

"I was unhappy with our 42 per cent completion rate in the first half. You can't afford to give any side 58 per cent possession and we did well to go in at 18-12.

"In our position every game is like a cup final and the side which raises its game is going to be successful and to be honest it was us today for the vast majority of the game."

Prop Alex Rowe scored two of the Doncaster tries –the second one being worth the admission money alone.

But his overall performance brought a mixed reaction from Stankevitch.

He said: "To be honest I have been really disappointed with Alex in some of the games that he has played.

"He is really frustrating to coach because you know how good he can be but it is hard getting him to play consistently well."

In contrast Stankevitch was glowing in his praise for centre Paul Anderson on his home debut.

He said: "I thought that he was the best player on the field. That is why I brought him to the club. I know what qualities he has."

Half-back Chris Forster could be a doubt for Sunday's crucial game at Batley.

He suffered suspected concussion as he tried to prevent Hornets' last-minute try.

The club have signed young Leeds Academy forward Ayden Faal.
