Stuart Pearce says England need to play better in tonight’s group B match against Ukraine at the European Under-21 Championship in Denmark.
England drew their opening game 1-1 with Spain on Sunday but Pearce is refusing to rule out making changes, including dropping captain Michael Mancienne.
Jack Rodwell is in line for a recall after impressing from the bench against Spain, with the goalkeeper and back four also looking assured of their places.
Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck will start, leaving Mancienne, Tom Cleverley, Fabrice Muamba, Marc Albrighton, Danny Rose and Scott Sinclair to compete for the final two spots.
“From the team, we’ll spring a captain - it’s as simple as that,” said Pearce. “We’ve worked on one or two tactical things but we’ve worked on that as a squad of 22 players, not as an 11 at this moment in time.
“Whoever plays will do us proud, whoever captains the team will do the same. If I need to freshen it up, have I got players there to step in and give the team a lift?
“They’re all telling me they’re ready.”
