Keeper Dean Henderson appeared to have stopped playing before Jonjo Shelvey’s goal as an offside flag was up, yet VAR ruled the goal legal.

Carroll doesn’t accept Sheffield United’s complaints though, and says that the if the Blades look back on the goal, ‘it was onside’.

As per the Newcastle Chronicle, he said: "As it was going on, it was just me going for a challenge, as normal. I thought it was onside, but the flag went up.

"You never know - it’s tight, really tight - looking back at it, it was onside. Jonjo’s been told if the flag goes up - continue. The ref said that at the beginning too (of the game) and that’s exactly what he did, and went through and scored.

"They’ve got to be unhappy about it but if they look back, it’s a matter of inches but it IS onside.

"Jonjo’s done the right thing and carried on and got the goal. And it kind of killed the game, really."
