Martin Allen hopes to have a conversation with the Proact decision makers about the possibility of signing Liam McAlinden.

The forward has been training with Town and played in both Saturday and Tuesday’s friendly games at Boston and Gainsborough.

He headed home Chesterfield’s third goal against Trinity and Allen likes the 24-year-old.

“He’s an experienced centre forward, he’s a good lad.

“He’s looking for a club and he’s coming with us on our two-day bonding trip.

“I’ve got to go to my bosses and see what we can do.”

McAlinden began his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, playing 19 times for the first team after signing his first professional contract.

In 2013 he switched international allegiance, despite having represented Northern Ireland up to Under 21 level, opting instead to play for the Republic of Ireland for whom he subsequently turned out in an Under 21 match.

He’s had two loan spells at both Shrewsbury and Fleetwood, as well as a loan stint at Crawley.

In May 2016 he signed for Exeter and made 73 appearances, scoring 11 times.

The Grecians released him at the end of last season.
