Fewkes gets lowdown on his showdown with Reid

JOHN FEWKES has made use of a 'spy' in the camp ahead of tomorrow night's lightweight clash with Gary Reid.

He has had a full briefing from British superfeatherweight champion Carl Johanneson who has sparred with Reid recently.

"It seems that Reid's tactics at Doncaster Dome will be that he will come gunning at me and try to get me in the first three rounds," said Fewkes.

"Carl has trained with him and says he is a come-forward fighter who will try to bully me into the ropes and then knock me out with some big shots.

"Carl said Reid had plenty of heart and determination who doesn't stop coming at you, is all-action, but can be outboxed.

"That's where I come in, because I am more than equipped to outbox and outclass him. But if it comes to the point where that doesn't work and I have to adapt, I can change it. I may be only 22 but I have got an old pro's head on me."

Fewkes is unbeaten with 15 straight wins) and cannot afford a slip-up as he tries to climb the greasy poll towards a decent national, then international title.

He has his eyes on a match-up with British champion John Thaxton, a boxer he says he has "a lot of respect for."

Norfolk Park-based Fewkes has sold 150 tickets for tomorrow's bout, which is on Leeds-based Johanneson's undercard as he defends his belt against Michael Gomez, of Manchester.

The event, organised by promoter Frank Maloney, Doncaster's John Rushton and Hillsborough's Glyn Rhodes, is being broadcast by Sky.

The undercard includes Swinton middleweight Ryan Rowlinson, Deepcar bantamweight Ross Burkinshaw and lightweights Dwayne Hill from Arbourthorne and Stefy Bull on home territory.
