Eagles lose Reid to Reds

SHEFFIELD Eagles have lost centre Damien Reid to relegated Salford Reds.

Salford coach Shaun McRae is rebuilding a side aimed at bouncing back into the Super League at the first attempt.

Reid's career was rebuilt at Don Valley last season after spells at Widnes, Halifax and Castleford.

Eagles' boss Mark Aston wanted to keep the 23-year-old but couldn't match Salford's terms.

He said: "I believe Salford have made a very reasonable offer to Damien. I spoke to him after the Halifax game and he confirmed that he would be signing for Salford.

"There's no regret. I have always rated him - the challenge for him is to perform consistently. He's goes to Salford with my best wishes. We thank him for what he's done for us."

Reid and the form of James Ford kept experienced centre Richard Newlove on the subs' bench in the final weeks of the season. Newlove has signed a new contract but Reid's move leaves the Eagles needing cover at centre.
