The Rovers squad today reports back for training at Cantley Park in what will be Ferguson’s first pre-season at the club.

And he says a ‘Darren Ferguson pre-season’ features plenty of ball and system work as soon as possible in a bid to ensure they are fully prepared for the start of the season on August 6 at Accrington Stanley.

But he also promised it would be no walk in the park for his players when it comes to fitness work.

“From Wednesday, so three days in, we’ll be doing shape work on different shapes,” Ferguson told The Star.

“There will be a lot of ball work. Most of it will be with the ball to be fair.

“The fitness coach can take the blame for all the other bits.

“It will be hard. The pre-season we’ve put together, the fitness coach can take a lot of credit.

“He’s put together all this stuff in terms of organisaiton and time scale which has been really good.

“But there will be ball work from day one, a lot of technical work and shape work to make sure they’re absolutely bang on for the start of the season.”

The Rovers squad completed two days of fitness testing at Leeds Beckett University last week ahead of their return to pre-season training,

Ferguson said: “It all went well. There were no fines to hand out.

“Gone are the days where they’d come back carrying an extra stone.

“They’ve all had programmes and I’m sure they’ve stuck to them.

“Speaking to some of them, they’re excited for the season ahead.”
