Doncaster Rovers: Promotion is be all and end all - Ferguson

Darren Ferguson has instigated his long-planned structural changes at Doncaster Rovers but insists his only focus is promotion this season.

Ferguson targeted changes throughout the playing arm of the club after first arriving at the Keepmoat last October.

Staffing changes have already been initiated with Paul Butler switching from first team coach to head of recruitment while academy manager Paul Wilson and kit and facilities manager Phil Goldman have both left the club.

But Ferguson says his overhaul of the club must take a backseat to the chase for an immediate return to League One.

“How I like to manage a club is to make sure there’s a good structure in place,” Ferguson told The Star.

“And I’m still trying to do that all the way from the bottom to the top.

“But I have to make it clear that the full focus has to be on us getting promoted this season.

“Then we build from there.”

Rovers have been installed as the second favourites for promotion next season behind Portsmouth.

And chief executive Gavin Baldwin believes only Pompey will have a bigger playing budget than Rovers in League Two next term.

But Ferguson insists no one should expect the club to have an easy ride next season.

He said: “I’d like to think the recruitment we’ve done this summer has been good.

“We’ve definitely strengthened the squad and it gives us a chance.

“We will fully respect the league. It’s not goint to be easy at all. No one is saying it is.

“But there’s no getting away from the fact the everyone here expects the same thing.”
