Doncaster Rovers: It's fitness first for Ferguson next season

Darren Ferguson says one of his top priorities this summer will be to ensure Doncaster Rovers have a healthy squad heading into next season '“ and most importantly one that will stay fit.

Rovers have been hit by a string of lengthy absences this season with Danny Andrew missing almost all the campaign while Alex Kiwomya and Luke McCullough were ruled out for the first six months.

And a defensive crisis since the New Year has seen every one of the club’s recognised centre halves face several weeks on the sidelines.

Avoiding lengthy injuries in the future is a goal for Ferguson in the closed season and he says that comes down to the right recruitment.

“Something I’ve got to look at for next season is certainly players that are going to be available all season,” Ferguson told The Star.

“Ones that keep getting injured, I’m going to have really, really think about.

“I think it’s important that we’re going to need players that are available for as much of the season.

“I’ll be looking at that with players I bring in, in terms of how many games they’ve played.

“It’s given us a problem.

“That’s no fault of the players, they’ve had bad injuries.

“But we need to make sure that’s the case for us.

“You cannot hide away from the fact that all season I’ve had a quarter of my squad out injured.

“No one else in the league will say that.

“That’s a hell of a lot of players. You’re looking at Danny Andrew, Alex Kiwomya, Mathieu Baudry – that’s three key players there.”
