Disillusioned Sheffield boxer ponders his future

Sheffield’s one-time ABA golden boy is disillusioned after three attempts to fight English super middleweight champion Jahmaine Smyle fell down.

Cameron reckons he is £6,000 out of pocket for the last two cancellations and is now back working as a roofer.

He is pinning his hopes on securing an undercard slot on Kell Brook’s world title defence at Bramall Lane, later this Summer.

But if that fails to materialise, then his whole future as a pro boxer is on the line.

“Sometimes I wish I’d just stayed in the amateurs” said the Manor Park family man. “I am at the stage where I have got to work out whether it is worth staying in the game. Before the last Smyle cancellation, I had lost weeks of (roofing) work, had training costs and spent money on the right diet food. I wasted £500 alone on medicals, brain and blood tests.

“Then it all didn’t happen because of some misunderstanding about allocation of tickets. I want to carry on, as there is still hope in my head. But, without naming names, I won’t fight bums like some people in Sheffield do. I only want to fight the best.

“I would love to fight someone like Paul Smith on Kell’s undercard, that would get me the right exposure. But if I can’t get that, it doesn’t look good for me.”

Promoter Dennis Hobson says he is looking to get the 25-year-old on a Sunderland show on July 10.

But Cameron (W19 L4) says: “That is definitely not going to happen. They are talking about me in with Jonson McClumpha (W11 L1 D1) but he lost to Lewis Taylor (December 2014) so he is damaged goods. What would be the point?”

Cameron, who may also resist Hobson’s suggestion of a move up to light heavyweight, has not campaigned since October last year.
