Frankie Dettori is counting on Blue Bunting’s steely determination to secure him a sixth Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday.
The last filly to lift the season’s final Classic was User Friendly back in 1992 but Godolphin and trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni have decided the daughter of Dynaformer deserves her shot. Dettori has been in the saddle throughout a fantastic season for Blue Bunting, which has seen her win the 1000 Guineas, Irish and Yorkshire Oaks, with their only defeat in the Epsom version.
“Usually it’s very hard for a filly to take on the colts, but she’s tough,” said Dettori. “She has won three Group Ones and I always like riding her. She’s as hard as nails and we go into the race hoping she is going to run another big one. The only time she got beat was at Epsom, which was slowly-run and turned into a sprint. This will be a strongly-run mile and six furlongs, she goes on any ground and I’m looking forward to riding her.”
