Derbys out to halt Notts' push for top

DERBYSHIRE will attempt to derail the Second Division promotion hopes of neighbours Notts when they meet in the County Championship at Queens Park tomorrow.

The floods earlier this Summer prevented Chester field’s picturesque venue from staging its Cricket Festival in July and the scheduled Championship fixture with Somerset was switched to Derby.

But the County club did not want Queens Park to miss out and so arranged for this week’s games starting with yesterday’s Pro 40 clash with Durham.

Notts are chasing promotion and a win over the next fours days will virtually guarantee them Division One cricket next season.

Derbyshire have suffered a blow this week with skipper Simon Katich announcing he will quit the county at the end of the season after an excellent campaign in which he has averaged 75.

They have also lost the left arm all rounder Ant Botha who, quite suddenly, joined Warwickshire last week.

Meanwhile Durham kept alive their chances of a treble when they went top of Pro40 Division two with a crushing seven-wicket victory at Chesterfield.

Former Derbyshire opener Michael Di Venuto made 64 as Durham cruised past their target of 196 with 75 balls to spare.

Phil Weston and Hassan Adnan both made half-centuries but the Phantoms never managed to break free.
