Rotherham’s Ben Swift confirmed his return to fitness with a second place finish on the first stage of the Bayern-Rundfahrt in Germany yesterday.

Swift, who missed nearly four months of the season with a knee injury, was narrowly beaten by Alex Rasmussen at the end of the 193.8 kilometre ride from Pfaffenhofen to Muhldorf.

Today’s stage starts in Muhldorf and takes the field 194.5km to Viechtach.

At the Giro d’Italia the 203km stage 17 from Caravaggio to Vicenza was won by Gianni Visconti of Movistar.

There was no change at the top of the general classification, with Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) preserving his one minute 26 seconds lead over BMC’s Cadel Evans, with Team Sky’s Rogoberto Uran 1:20 further adrift

Today’s Mori to Polsa individual time trial is 19.4km uphill. The race ends on Sunday in Brescia.
