Stand-in skipper Jaco Scholtz hit an inspired 92 for Sheffield United - but couldn’t prevent his side going down to an eight-wicket defeat against Rotherham Town in the Yorkshire Premier Cricket League on Saturday.
United batted first and racked-up 177 but were bowled out inside of 50 overs, with none of the order being able to match Scholtz’s haul before Rotherham took to the crease.
Will Street took 3-42 for Rotherham Town, before a steady partnership of Mark Cummins and Gareth Purshouse made 57 and 61 respectively to claim a comfortable eight-wicket victory from just 32 overs. The result keeps Rotherham a point clear at the top of league whilst defeat for United means they narrowly avoid falling to the foot of the table.
Bottom of the table Hull suffered a six wicket defeat to second-placed Barnsley, for whom Zohaib Ahmad hit an unbeaten 66 in a 213-4 innings.
It was a comfortable victory for Barnsley who swept past Hull’s total of 208 with overs to spare, Mathew Wilson and Jonathan Trower adding to the haul with 37 and 47 respectively.
Ahmad took 3-32 for Barnsley who eased to victory despite Hull’s Chris Grey chipping in with 66. They remain a point behind Rotherham following their seventh win of the season.
Sheffield Collegiate moved up to eleventh after they defeated Cleethorpes for just their second win of the season, with Will Root finishing unbeaten on 46 having already taken three wickets for 34.
Cleethorpes were all out for 81 after five of their order were out for a duck, leaving Collegiate with a target that they reached off just 11.1 overs with eight wickets to spare.
Simon Guy was also unbeaten at the crease as he notched a total of 36 to help Collegiate make light work of a modest target.
