Joe Root admits that England’s batsmen have not performed well so far in their One-Day tour of Sri Lanka - but remains optimistic that the tourists can fight their way back into the series, despite currently being 3-1 behind.
Root will play for England today in the fifth ODI of the seven-match series. And when asked if England can stage a dramatic turnaround and win the series 4-3, the Sheffield Collegiate product said: “There’s no reason why we can’t.
“I think we’ve shown in every game at some point along the way that we are capable of doing that. The thing for us now is to make sure we put it into one complete performance.”
“Now’s the time for us to step up and start putting in performances, and this is a great opportunity for us to do that under pressure before the World Cup,” the 23-year-old added.
“Even the game we did win, we didn’t play at our absolute best - which, again, is promising.
“But you don’t want to talk about being promising all the time.
“This sort of pressure is good preparation for the World Cup, and we want to end the series on a high.”
