Yorkshire’s move for New Zealand Test batsman Kane Williamson was essential to help keep the county on track in their bid to win the County Championship.

That’s the view of head coach Jason Gillespie as the club acted after in-form Gary Ballance was called into the England Lions side to play Bangladesh A meaning he misses Yorkshire’s next Championship clash with Notts at Trent Bridge starting on August 21.

“We have moved swiftly to strengthen the side going into the final five matches of the season,” said Gillespie.

Michael Vaughan, representing the club’s Board on cricketing matters, also played a pivotal role in securing Williamson, 23, who batted in the middle order during NZ’s Tests here this Summer and averages 40 in first class cricket.
