England call for impressive Joe

SHEFFIELD’S Joe Root has been included in a 17-man England Performance Programme squad after an impressive first full season with Yorkshire.

The 20-year-old batsman, who learnt his trade at Michael Vaughan’s old club Sheffield Collegiate, scored almost 1,000 runs for the White Rose county last term and was one of the few positives in a season which saw them relegated to the second division of the County Championship.

Root, along with county colleague Jonathan Bairstow, will attend a three-week training programme at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough in November followed by a training camp in India.
