ENGLAND batting coach Graham Gooch has admitted that it will be ‘difficult’ choosing between Joe Root and Nick Compton if they decide to have one of them as Alastair Cook’s opening partner for the First Test on November 15.
It is thought Nick Compton’s unbeaten half-century against Mumbai A on Monday has inched him ahead of Sheffield’s Root in the battle for a Test debut next week.
“I think they’re two very good players, obviously at different levels of their career,” said Gooch.
“Nick has been in the first-class game for a while, gained experience, found the way he can score runs and been very successful over the last couple of years for Somerset.
“Joe is obviously a young, exciting player. He has a good technique from what I’ve seen - this is the first time I’ve seen him close up - and he bowls a bit.
“So it’s going to be quite a difficult selection,” admitted Gooch.”
Cricket writer David Warner will talk about “The Sweetest Rose” his new book on 150 years of Yorkshire cricket at Sheffield Cricket Lovers Society’s meeting at Abbeydale tonight (7.45).
