Cricket: Tykes take it into final day

Have your say

AN eighth wicket stand of 81 between Gary Ballance and Ryan Sidebottom unexpectedly allowed Yorkshire’s County Championship Division One clash against Sussex at Headingley to go into a fourth and final day today.

Sidebottom departed after resisting for 29 overs and when bad light ended play shortly afterwards Yorkshire were 228 for eight and still requiring a further 32 to make the visitors bat again.

Yorkshire still face the very real prospect of losing their first Championship game in 19 outings, their last defeat being at Headingley against Warwickshire in August 2011.

At 140 for seven Yorkshire were in deep trouble but Ballance showed plenty of spirit and was ably supported by Sidebottom who loosened Monty Panesar’s tight grip by swinging him over mid-wicket for six after Ballance had swept the left-arm spinner for four earlier in the over.
