FORMER Test umpires John Hampshire and John Holder are set to give a boost to the local umpiring fraternity.

Hampshire, the former Yorkshire and England batsman and a Test umpire for 15 years, is the new President of the S.Yorkshire branch of the Association of Cricket Officials (ACO).

Meanwhile, he and Holder - both mentors for the ECB, will speak at the South Yorkshire Cricket League’s Umpires’ and Captains’ meeting at Rotherham Phoenix on April 10 (7pm).

n Joe Root has been praised for his part in England’s draw in the Third and final Test which secured a drawn series in New Zealand.

“It wasn’t just about me, I had help from others - Joe Root did really well on the last day and don’t forget he batted over four hours in the first knock,” said Matt Prior whose unbeaten century enabled Alastair Cook’s side to scramble a draw with nine wickets down.
