Sheffield’s Joe Root hit a century on his captaincy debut for England Lions against New Zealand ahead of next Thursday’s First Test at Lord’s.

The tourists, resuming on 184-3, were dismissed for 285. Hamish Rutherford, 116 overnight, was out for 126. Toby Roland-Jones took 4-54.

Root, at No 3, joined Michael Carberry at 19-1 and they posted a century stand. Root went on to make 105 not out, Carberry made 77 and the Lions closed on 219-2 at Leicester.

n With rain delaying play on the final day at Headingley, Yorkshire had to go for bowling bonus points and got the three when Somerset, resuming 190-5, were dismissed for 252 (Tim Bresnan 4-76).

Still 253 behind, they followed on and Jack Brooks took four wickets to reduce Somerset to 61-6 but time ran out.
