A new captain but familiar words and the same losing story for England in Australia.
However, there was some joy there with England’s Women retaining the Ashes.
Stuart Broad, captaining England in the three T20 matches, sounded rather like Test and ODI captain Alastair Cook after losing the opening T20 game in Hobart by 13 runs.
“We didn’t play as well as we could have done and we didn’t take our catches,” said Broad.
Australia made 213-4 with openers Cameron White, 75 off 43 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes) and Aaron Finch, 52 off 31 balls (5 fours, 3 sixes), putting on 106 in 10.4 overs.
Ravi Bopara made England’s fastest T20 50 off 23 balls, finishing on 65 not out including 7 sixes, with England 200-9. Joe Root made 32.
Also in Hobart, before the men’s game, England’s women got the victory they needed to secure the Ashes when winning their opening T20 fixture by nine wickets.
Australia made 150-3 but England cruised home at 151-1 from 17.5 overs with Charlotte Edwards 92no and Sarah Taylor 50 not out.
